By Dana Royer/34 Raceway
BURLINGTON, IA (6-21-14) – Two racers at 34 Raceway picked up their first feature
wins of the season at 34 Raceway on Casebine Credit Union and Louisa Communications
Fan Appreciation Night Saturday night, June 21. Justin Newberry, Danville, made a
last lap pass to take the checkered flag in the W.T. Gabeline and Sons Trucking 305
Sprint feature and Creston Williams, Newhall, held off Bobby Anders to get his
first win in the Casebine Credit Union IMCA Sport Mod feature race. Four racers
returned to victory lane including Jeff Waterman, Quincy, Il. (IMCA Modifieds),
Tommy Bowling, Danville (IMCA Stock Cars), Austen Becerra, Carthage, Il. (4
cylinders) and Daniel Keltner, Coralville (Mod Lites).
Coming up this week the World of Outlaws STP Sprints return to 34 Raceway on Friday,
June 27 for the Salute to the King (Steve Kinser). It’s a must see show!. Also
running will be the W.T. Gabeline and Sons Trucking 305 Sprints and the Midget
Lites. Go to www.34raceway.com for more details.
All six classes were back in action at 34 Raceway this week. The first class to take
to the track for their feature event was the Pepsi IMCA Stock Cars with Tommy
Bowling, Danville, getting the win. Bowling took the lead from Mark Bowman in the
thirteen car field on lap three and pulled away from the field. Ray Raker, Jim Lynch
and Jake Wenig battled early on for the second spot before Raker and Lynch both
would pull in with car problems. Wenig moved up to the second spot followed by Chad
Krogmeier, Dane Fenton and Mark Bowman rounding out the top five.
The Coors Light Mod Lite class numbers dropped this week with six cars taking on the
3/8 mile, but that didn’t stop them from racing hard for the win. Gary Snyder lead
the field by the end of the first green flag lap but two time 34 Raceway winner
Daniel Keltner was closing in. Keltner, Coralville, took the lead from Snyder on
the fourth lap of the twen lap feature and went on to cruise to his third win this
season at 34. Justin Buchholz would follow to finish second followed by Devon Rouse,
Snyder and Collin Ball rounding out the top five.
Creston Williams, Newhall, picked up his first Casebine Credit Union IMCA Sport Mod
feature in a close finish. Williams led the twelve car field for the first twelve
laps of the fifteen lap feature before a caution flag came out on lap thirteen. The
restart allowed Sean Wyett and Bobby Anders a chance at the lead but Williams was
able to hold on. On the white flag lap another caution came out setting up a green,
white checkered finish and a battle for the win. Anders took a shot at the leader,
Williams, pulling along side but couldn’t hold hold his position with Williams
pulling ahead and holding on for the win. Anders followed in second and Sean Wyett,
Adam Shelman and Joey Gower rounded out the top five.
Austen Becerra, Carthage, Il., picked up his fourth Louisa Communications 4 Cylinder
feature win passing Ron Kibbe, Danville, on lap seven of the fifteen car, twelve lap
feature. Becerra took the checkered flag by several car lengths with Kibble, Wayne
Noble, Cody Washburn and Larry Miller rounding out the top five.
Fourteen Ryner Transportation IMCA Modifieds set the field for their twenty lap
feature with Larry McConnell and Dugan Thye on the front row. Thye led the field
around the first circuit but would be passed by Mitch Morris on lap two. Morris had
to battle to hold off Dennis LaVeine early on before Jeff Waterman would join in on
the fun. Waterman moved into the second spot on lap eleven and had his sights set on
Morris. The two put on a good clean race for the next five laps when Waterman would
pass Morris in turn three and went on to take the checkered flag five laps later
for the win. Morris, Bill Roberts, Jr., LaVeine and Thye would round out the top
The final feature of the night saw eighteen W.T. Gabeline and Sons Trucking 305
Sprints give the fans a show with an exciting finish. Shawn Whiting, Burlington,
took the early lead from his front row start. By lap twelve of the twenty lap race
Whiting would run into lap traffic. Meanwhile, Donnie Steward had moved up from his
sixth row start to the second spot . But Steward’s run was shortened on lap thirteen
when a puff of smoke came from his #73 and he headed to the pit area. Justin
Newberry then held down the second place spot as Whiting continued his run. On the
final lap it looked like Whiting was going to get his elusive win. But Newberry had
other plans passing Whiting coming out of turn four on the final lap and took the
win. Whiting, Dillan Roth, John Schulz and Cody Wehrle would round out the top
